Mr. Mertens has provided services in the investigation and litigation support of hundreds of cases involving structural concerns. His experience encompasses supporting clients throughout the entire litigation lifecycle, including claim research, analysis and reporting, document preparation, expert testimony, negotiation, mediation, arbitration, and trial.
He has led investigations of concrete, steel, wood, and masonry structures, as well as their interior finishes and building envelope components that were damaged because of design or construction defects, construction procedures, natural hazards, ground settlement, water intrusion, and material aging and degradation.
Mr. Mertens has held several positions in the field of structural engineering, most recently as a Building Code Enforcement Official for the City and County of Denver. He has experience in the building code development process and expertise in interpreting and applying building industry design codes.
He began his career as a structural designer with a prominent engineering firm and has acted as the Project Engineer for a variety of projects including the design and evaluation of high-rise buildings, healthcare campuses, sports facilities, commercial structures, educational facilities, and private residential homes.
Mr. Mertens holds a Master of Science in Civil Engineering with a Structural Emphasis from Texas A&M University, and is licensed in Colorado, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas.
